Old Town School performers Mark Dvorak and Christopher Walz perform October 8 – 11 on historic Pullman Rail Journey
CHICAGO IL – Pullman Rail Journeys and the Old Town School of Folk Music announce a partnership to provide world-class entertainment on selected trips. The music programming reunites the American Songbook with Golden Age Rail travel. Pullman Rail Journeys is a rail transportation experience of a bygone time in distinguished Pullman Rail Cars restored to original splendor with modern enhancements to accommodate today’s traveler. Joining the train on selected trips will be live performers from the Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago’s long-running hub of music, culture and community since 1957.
“The Old Town School of Folk Music holds a special place in my heart,” said Ed Ellis, President of Iowa Pacific Holdings, to which Pullman Rail Journeys belongs. “As a student at the Old Town School, I met my wife. But beyond my personal connection, so much American music has been influenced by the railroad, and the partnership between the Old Town School and Pullman seemed to be anatural fit.”
Pullman cars leave Chicago on the historic City of New Orleans, a train made famous by Chicago’s own Steve Goodman in his folk song of the same name. Pullman Rail Journeys features authentic Pullman service in elegant, first-class rail accommodations, and the new entertainment partnership with the Old Town School of Folk Music further enhances the experience as travelers are moved between the Windy City and the Big Easy. Programming will focus on the musical experience traveling down the Mississippi featuring blues, jazz, folk and even some dance performances.
“The Old Town School of Folk Music is particularly excited to be entering into this partnership because of its resonance with ur own history,” said Old Town School Executive Director Bau Graves. “As you may know, Steve Goodman – the composer of The City of New Orleans – was once a student at the Old Town School. This is song is sung and played hundreds of times every year at the school. When Ed Ellis asked if some of our teaching artists might be interested in performing on the actual ‘train they call the City of New Orleans,’ it seemed too good to be true.”
Launching the tours this fall are a diverse and unique group of performers including Mark Dvorak, Christopher Walz, Reginald Robinson, Katherine Davis, Reggio McLaughlin, Steve Rosen, Barbie Silverman, Lance Brown, Mike Levin and The Pickin’ Bubs.
Pullman Rail Journeys also joins the Old Town School as a generous corporate sponsor, supporting education and performance programs at the nation’s largest public arts school.
